Hi,

I know I'm late to this, but I just wanted to say that I'm a big Northrup fan too and -- yes, it was the almighty Oprah who introduced me to her. Just wanted to add that she has a new book out -- The secret pleasures of menopause (hope I got that correct). I haven't read it yet, but plan to. What she says really resonates with me, too. You might also be interested in reading the articles at women to women dot com. It's part of the clinic Northrup founded in Maine. All the advice there is very much in keeping with her style and attitude -- and it's free! I'm enjoying reading your blog.

I took a chance on going to google and putting in the key words celiacs and birdshot together and read your response. I have been diagnosed with birdshot for 7 years now and have only been diagnosed with celiacs since last October (after losing 35 pounds in 3 months and my hair) A simple blood test detected it and I have been diligent about avoiding gluten altogether with positive results. Will wait and see how the eyes go. Have also been on thyroid medication for some 18 years. Interestingly enough, my "aches and pains" associated with fibromyalgia and vasculitis have almost completely disappeared since changing my diet and I feel great! I had a friend of mine get tested several months ago and she came up gluten sensitive as well. I am on "my band wagon" to everyone I know to get tested. Why do not doctors do this testing routinely?

you are so right. preparing for change is important.

it can be so easy to see an advert, rush out and buy skin this, health that, improve the other. When reading some articles, a report or a book would get you on the right track. And reading will do no damage.

Celiac has popped up in relation to my own disease, a cancer of the bone marrow called myeloma. A friend sent this article to me:

Let us know how the gluten-free diet goes.

I agree with you on the unwillingness of your doctor to work with you on this. Sometimes it feels like we're all out here on our own. Certainly it sometimes seems like we have to know almost as much about our conditions as the medical professionals do.

I also have birdshot so I am very much interested in the alpha feto protein clinical trial. I've read about the trial on the internet but to hear from someone involved in it is much more insightful. I was diagnosed in 1998 but have had symptoms since 1990.I've never been on systemic drugs. I had macular edema in my left eye in 2003 and was treated with steroid injections. A year ago I began to have problems in my right eye with light sensitivity and a problem with dark/light contrast which made it difficult to read. I was treated with steroid and Nevanac drops. Today I have visual problems, color fading, wavy lines and acuity that ranges from 20/30 to 20/50 in my left eye and I have two blind spots from what I suspect are birdshot lesions in my right eye but little color fading and acuity of 20/25+. I worry about further visual loss and I don't know what to do about treatment because up to this point I've refused the prednisone and immune suppressants. I'm hoping the alpha feto protein will turn out be a good option.

I posted today (5/27/07) with some comments. By the way, what studies have you been involved in? Did you ever receive the placebo? Did you have a good experience overall?
